For this reason, manufacturing support and company's competitive advantages has been one of the dominant application areas for knowledge-based systems same through with organitional perforamnce.Knowledge-based systems enable computers to be broader and more effective problem-solving tools; help users develop better designs and better processes by making the best design and manufacturing expertise readily available; and help users identify relationships among design geometry, materials and production processes, and leverage these relationships to provide the best combination of product features, quality and cost, share a common goal: better acquisition and application of knowledge. Knowledge is required to design products and processes that are feasible, cost-effective and functional. Once the product is designed and the manufacturing process is under way, knowledge is used to analyze data, identify trends and problems, and define appropriate corrective actions.

Question # 3

1. Describe or define VO.

A workplace that is not based in one physical location but consists of employees working remotely by using information and communications technologies. A virtual office is characterized by the use of teleworkers, telecenters, mobile workers, hot-desking, and hoteling, and promotes the use of virtual teams.

2. Distinguish VO from MIS.

A virtual organization or company is one whose members are geographically apart, usually working by computer e-mail and groupware while appearing to others to be a single, unified organization with a real physical location, while the (MIS) management information systems are those systems that allow managers to make decisions for the successful operation of businesses. Management information systems consist of computer resources, people, and procedures used in the modern business enterprise.

3. Illustrate (give examples) how VO can improve company's competitive advantage and organizational performance.

If, for instance, you have a small company that is manufacturing or selling products in the Italian market and they wish to establish a sales office in London, for example, but don't wish to invest in physical office space in London, to take on permanent staff to carry out the sales functions in that office - at least until they've established whether there is a market for the product in the London environment - it is quite possible for that company to establish what we would call a virtual office in another country with a local telephone number. That number can be called by customers in the London area and the calls received and rediverted then to the office in Italy, if there is a customer that wants further information about products. So this is a virtual presence of that company in a different market without necessarily having the physical office space and the permanent staff that go with it. It's a very important way that smaller companies in the European Union can start to use the single European market to enlarge the market for their services without a large initial investment. But this is again another example of how working at a distance, representing your company' products and services at a distance, can now be enabled through the information networks in a very cost-effective way.

queation #3

For those who are not working, research one company in the net who is using computerized database systems. Describe the use and/or nature of these systems and describe too the benefits/disadvantages from these systems. Include your reference.

The WESTERN UNION use database in hiring the employee and giving their salary . One table contains the fields EMPLOYEE-ID, LAST-NAME, FIRST NAME, and HIRE-DATE, and another table contains the fields DEPT, EMPLOYEE-ID, and SALARY, a relational database can match the EMPLOYEE-ID fields in the two tables to find such information as the names of all employees earning. a certain salary or the departments of all employees hired after a certain date.

The benefits are as fallow..
1.Is able to change the structure of the logical record (by adding or moving data fields).
2.It reduces the application programming effort.
3.It could easily look the files of an employee
4.It manages more efficiently the creation and modification of, and access to, data
The disadvantages are as fallow..
1.Because the details are stored and processed independently, details that are supposed to be the same (for example, a customer's name and address), might be inconsistent in the various applications.
2.When common data has to be changed, it must be changed in several places, causing a high workload.
3.If any copies of the data are missed, it results in the problems detailed in the previous point.

question #2

1.Research 1 company and describe how they protect their company from internet risks.

The Western Union endeavor to maintain physical, electrical and procedural safeguards that comply with applicable government regulations to guard the customer Information. They also endeavor to restrict Information access to their employees, agents and representatives that need to know it. Despite of their efforts, and as you probably know, third parties may unlawfully intercept or access transmissions sent to them or may wrongly instruct you to disclose Information to them while posing as Western Union.

2. Also, research for possible risks or dangers and/or impacts of internet - related crimes to a company.

However, the evolution of the Internet has also created risks for businesses and even entire industries; companies have been caught off-guard as new internet-based business models have developed, and are unable or unwilling to adopt new business practices. This causes problems because the network effect of the Internet allows issues to evolve much faster than management are traditionally conditioned to react to.
The Internet can destroy entire market sectors. For example, the local travel agency sector has been severely affected by the availability of online booking facilities, which have enabled airlines and hotels to easily do business direct with their customers. AMERICAN EXPRESS COMPANY
is an example of a major travel agency that has seen demand for their travel-related services decrease as more consumers and businesses rely on online travel portals.
